Energy savings in IT

Thank you for your interest in the topic of "Saving Energy"!

As already announced in the circular mail on the subject of "Reducing energy costs, safeguarding operations", we would like to give you a few general tips on the energy-saving use of IT equipment:

#1 Shut down your device when you leave the workplace for a long time
Shut down your computer or laptop after use. Make sure that the monitors are at least in stand-by (better: completely off - see #3).

#2 Lock your computer when you leave your workplace for a short time
If you are only away from your PC for a short time, you can use this function to put your PC/monitor into energy-saving mode or stand-by more quickly.

In addition to the energy saving measures, you have the security that unauthorized persons cannot use your PC in the meantime. To do this, press the keys at the same time:

Windows:   [WINDOWS] + [L]
MacOS:   [CTRL] + [CMD] + [Q]
Ubuntu:  [CMD] + [ALT] + [L]

#3 Pull the plug!
Even PCs and monitors that are shut down or put into stand-by, as well as chargers, mice and keyboards, continue to consume power.

Therefore, unplug the devices! Consider purchasing power strips that can be switched off.

#4 Unplug unused hardware & accessories
Turn off unused equipment and unplug it from the wall outlet. If possible, do not print on the office printer, but use the department printers (if available).

#5 Adjust your power saving mode on the computer
Many operating systems have a power saving setting. Use it by reducing the time until the screen turns off or the transition to energy-saving mode.

Instructions for customizing the power saving mode:
Windows
MacOS [soon]
Ubuntu [soon]

# 6 Disable the screen saver
A screen saver prevents your computer and all connected monitors from going into power-saving mode. Disable it.

Often, these are small energy savings, but with approximately 850 supervised workstations, 260 pool PCs and around 8500 students, they can lead to large savings. All members of the university can save quite a bit of energy by taking these simple measures - also at home!

Please note:

Unfortunately, due to the merger and the tight staff situation at the URZ, our support cannot currently help you implement these measures at your site. We ask you here to try out these tips yourself!

Do you have any other (non-IT related) suggestions on how to save energy?
The Taskforce Energy Saving will be pleased to take up these, please contact  energiesparen(at)uni-landau.de
